Weather Policy

Inclement Weather Policy

Dickinson Parks & Recreation District (DPRD) will use the following guidelines and procedures for inclement weather conditions to protect participants, spectators and staff. Inclement weather will affect programs and facilities differently based upon location, availability of shelter and severity of weather. DPRD reserves the right to cancel or postpone activities due to weather conditions.

For air quality issues, we will use airnow.gov as our official air quality resources. Air quality above 200 (red + purple levels) will lead to cancellations or moving indoors.

REGULAR PROGRAM/EVENT CANCELLATIONS

When a program is cancelled, information will be posted on social media and through the DPRD mobile app.

Cancellations will be made no later than the following times. Some programs/events may be cancelled on site, if needed.

  • Morning activities – 8:30 am
  • Afternoon activities – 11:00 am (t-ball – 3:00 pm, if possible)
  • Evening activities – 4:30 pm
OUTDOOR POOL WEATHER POLICY

Management will clear the pool and/or close if any of the following apply:

  • The current temperature is 68 or colder.
  • Heavy rain makes it difficult to see the bottom of the pool.
  • There is an electrical storm. We use a 30-minute timer after each lightning strike within 10 mile radius. *Storms will be monitored via Perry Weather system.
  • There is a tornado warning.
  • There is low attendance.

*Full pool closures will be made at management’s discretion. Maximum electrical storm closure will last at most an hour. Factors involved in the decision will be; time of day, indoor pool schedule, current head count of patrons, future weather outlook by radar.

We will make a call at 10:00 am if the pool will be open for the scheduled opening.

If the pool doesn’t open at noon due to any of the reasons above, we will re-evaluate and make a call at 3:00 pm for evening swim from 4:00-7:00 pm.
