Summer Art

Welcome to Summer Art where students will have the opportunity to develop essential skills while using a variety of supplies to create unique projects that showcase their own creative expression. Each week will feature new goals and exciting projects to spark creativity. All supplies are included.

Registration deadline is the Wednesday prior to each session.

Session 3 | July 6-16 | Mon-Thu | Theme: Bloom Blast!

Monday: Perspective Flowers
Focusing on perspective, create a drawing of a bouquet of flowers- draw each so that they’re viewed from a different angle. How do the petals look from below? Do they droop down and overlap? Can you actually see the whole petal when looking from above? Etc., learning the art concept of “draw what you see, not what you think you see.” Then, write names on the papers using one-point perspective.
Tuesday: Paper Flowers
Stack tissue paper, fold in an accordion fold, wrap a pipe cleaner around the middle, cut ends, unfold into round shape. Pull each layer of paper up towards the middle. For older kids, fold flowers from origami as well. Explore how small the tissue paper flowers can be made, and glue them to the front of greeting cards.
Wednesday Flower Garden Bookmarks
Exploring the idea of focal point, draw and cut flower shapes from construction paper, making one flower a different color. Glue onto luggage rages or cut strips of construction paper/cardstock/etc. Layer, stack, cover them! Punch hole, tie with yarn. On the back, make a drawing of bees visiting the flowers that somehow uses focal point.
Thursday: Flower Pinwheels
Cut flower shape from construction paper, and smaller inner circle. Cut small strips of construction paper, fold in half to make a long, thin triangle, and glue onto each petal (for surface area to blow on). Poke hole large enough for a plastic straw in the middle. Cut a plastic straw in thirds, glue one end to a popsicle stick. Add paper flower to the straw. Seal end with a circle for the middle of the flower..

Monday: Mini Egypt Dioramas
Use a ruler or other straightedge to draw a brick pattern on tan paper. Cut triangles out. Tape together to form a pyramid. Glue sprinkle of craft sand on mini canvas, glue pyramid on top. Add camels, palm trees, etc. cut from construction paper.
Tuesday: Australian Animal Mix-Ups
Color animal coloring sheets (kangaroo, koala, platypus, dingo) (or draw for older kids). Fold sheet of construction paper in half for cover, staple coloring sheets in the middle. Cut slits in middle pages only (three sections) so the animal face/body/legs can mix and match.
Wednesday: Safari Printmaking Pages
Draw pawprints, hoofprints, or zebra stripes on sheet of self-adhesive foam. Cut out and stick onto cardstock sheet in desired pattern. Paint thickly onto foam shapes. Gently lay sheet of paper overtop and press onto foam areas. Pull back to reveal the print! Repeat with same colors or multiples. Discuss color themes and explore multi-colored prints, especially for older kids.
Thursday: Rice/Tea Bag Treasure Maps
Pour rice/beads/whatever in a small pile on a sheet of paper. Trace around the border of the pile with a marker. Soak a teabag in water, squeeze it out, then use it to “paint” across the page. Dry and decorate the map area with x’s, dotted lines, etc. Draw waves around the outside. Have older kids write names like “home,” “treasure,” “boulder,” “scary things here!”, etc and decorate with more drawings.
