After consulting with three different agencies, our staff treated all of our pine trees this spring with a pesticide called Permethrin SFR to treat what are known as Engraver Beetles. This pest damages the trees by penetrating the bark, then tunnels its way through the first layer of wood under the bark. This is the same beetle that has caused problems in Nebraska, Wyoming, and South Dakota. We will be conducting another treatment in early August.
The blight problem we have been dealing with for the past three years or so appears to be cycling out with the needle cycle of the pines. We will continue to treat this problem with a deep root fertilizer this fall.
